Slow Train Coming, Train to Nowhere, Murder on the Orient Express, Freight Train Blues ... Countless stories, myths and mysteries on the rail. If we drive today in an open carriage of a high speed train from A to B, we don't feel nothing like that. It is convenient, but not an adventure.
But on really long train rides, with little comfort, low speed, extended breaks and a random community in the compartment the magic is there, even if it is inconvenient and cumbersome sometimes.
Janine Graubaum traveled thousands of kilometers in mighty, rumbling trains through Eastern Europe, the Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Belarus and Russia - not once, but repeatedly. For her not even the way was the goal, but being underway. Waiting at train stations, endless trips through the night, passing landscapes, fleeting but intense encounters with other travelers and looking for some food during stopovers. Of course, her book also talks about the countries she has visited, but even more about the peculiar intimacy among people who have nothing in common except that they are on the same train and go in the same direction. No matter who they are, where they come from and where they are going to.
KOSMOS TRAIN is a journey with no beginning or end. It is a book about being on the move beyond everyday experiences. It is a book about how exciting and easy things can be and how naturally people meet in the microcosm of the trains. Janine Graubaum has found great images for that.
